As of March 2025, the confirmed toll fee for light vehicles (Class 1) at Malelane is:

R89.00 per trip

For larger vehicles, tolls are calculated based on the number of axles. TRAC uses the standard 4-class vehicle system:

  • Class 1: Cars, bakkies, and motorcycles
  • Class 2: Small trucks and vans with two axles
  • Class 3: Trucks with 3 or 4 axles
  • Class 4: Heavy-duty vehicles with 5 or more axles

If you’re pulling a trailer or driving a commercial vehicle, your cost will be higher depending on the axle count.

The toll plaza is positioned on the N4 highway about 18 km west of Malelane town in Mpumalanga, just before reaching the Komatipoort border area. All eastbound and westbound traffic on the N4 must pass through this plaza.

This route is commonly used by:

  • Travellers heading to Kruger National Park via the Malelane Gate
  • Cross-border traffic between South Africa and Mozambique
  • Transport operators moving goods between Gauteng and Maputo

If you’re driving from Johannesburg to the Kruger area via Malelane, you will pass through multiple tolls. Here’s a breakdown of estimated one-way toll fees for a standard light vehicle (Class 1):

The Malelane Toll Gate accepts the following payment methods:

  • Cash in South African Rand
  • Most South African credit cards (Visa and Mastercard)
  • Note: Some tolls on the TRAC route may not accept debit cards or contactless payments, so carry physical cash as a backup

Always ensure your payment method is working before travel, especially if you’re heading toward the border, where ATM access may be limited.

  • All vehicles are charged in both directions. If you’re returning on the same day, you will pay the fee again.
  • Adding a trailer increases your axle count and will place you in a higher toll class with a higher fee.
  • TRAC tolls do not offer commuter or frequent user discounts. Each trip is charged at the full applicable rate.
  • It’s best to verify fees before your trip using signage at the plaza or by contacting TRAC directly.
