This estimate works out your monthly car finance instalment based on the vehicle price, deposit, balloon payment, interest rate and term you enter.

Quick Answer

To calculate a vehicle finance instalment, subtract your deposit and trade-in from the vehicle price to get the amount financed, then apply reducing balance amortisation over your loan term at your interest rate, minus the discounted value of any balloon payment. Add the monthly service fee, capped at R69 excluding VAT, for your total monthly payment. Use the calculator above for your own figures.

How to Use the Vehicle Bond Calculator

Three quick steps to work out your instalment.

  1. 1 Choose a calculation type. Pick Vehicle Price to Monthly Instalment if you know the price, or Monthly Instalment to Vehicle Price if you know what you can afford.
  2. 2 Enter the vehicle price or instalment, along with your deposit, balloon, interest rate and term. These determine how the finance is structured.
  3. 3 Press Calculate. Your instalment, amount financed, total interest and full breakdown appear instantly. Use “Copy Result” to save it.

The Vehicle Finance Calculation Formula

Your instalment is worked out using standard reducing balance amortisation, adjusted for a balloon payment if used.

Amount Financed = Vehicle Price – Deposit / Trade-in
Balloon Amount = Amount Financed x Balloon Percentage
Monthly Instalment = [Amount Financed – Balloon Amount x (1 + i)^-n] / [(1 – (1 + i)^-n) / i]
Where i = Interest Rate / 12 / 100, and n = Loan Term in Months
Total Interest Paid = (Monthly Instalment x n) + Balloon Amount – Amount Financed

Interest accrues on the full outstanding balance every month, including the portion tied up in the balloon payment, so a balloon lowers your monthly instalment but does not reduce the total interest charged over the loan.

Vehicle Finance in South Africa: The Complete Guide

Financing a car in South Africa involves more moving parts than the sticker price alone. Your deposit, interest rate, loan term and any balloon payment all interact to determine your monthly instalment and the total cost of the vehicle over the life of the loan.

How vehicle finance instalments are calculated

Vehicle finance uses reducing balance amortisation, the same method used for home loans. Each monthly instalment covers interest on the outstanding balance plus a portion of the capital, with the interest portion shrinking and the capital portion growing over the term. Most South African vehicle finance is variable rate, so your instalment changes if the South African Reserve Bank adjusts the repo rate.

Understanding balloon payments

A balloon, or residual, payment is a portion of the amount financed that is deferred to the end of the term rather than paid off monthly. This lowers your monthly instalment, but interest still accrues on the balloon portion for the full term, and the full balloon amount falls due as a lump sum at the end. Balloon payments typically range from 20% to 30% of the amount financed, and a higher balloon increases the risk that the car’s resale value will not cover what is still owed.

Fees on top of your instalment

Beyond principal and interest, South African vehicle finance agreements include a once off initiation fee, capped by the National Credit Act at R1,207.50 including VAT, and a monthly service fee capped at R69 excluding VAT. Comprehensive car insurance is also compulsory on any financed vehicle and is billed separately by your insurer, typically adding several hundred to a few thousand rand a month depending on the vehicle and your risk profile.

Working out how much car you can afford

Rather than starting with a vehicle price, it is often more useful to start with what you can comfortably repay each month, then work backwards to the vehicle price that fits your budget. This helps avoid overextending on a loan term or balloon structure that looks affordable on paper but leaves little room for insurance, fuel and maintenance costs.

Why understanding your instalment matters

  • It helps you compare finance offers from different banks on equal terms.
  • It shows you how a balloon payment trades a lower monthly cost for a lump sum later.
  • It helps you set a realistic budget before visiting a dealership.
  • It reveals the true interest cost of stretching a loan over a longer term.

Methodology

This calculator subtracts your deposit and trade-in from the vehicle price to find the amount financed, then applies reducing balance amortisation over your chosen term and interest rate, adjusted for any balloon payment as a percentage of the amount financed. The reverse calculation solves for the amount financed and vehicle price that produce your desired monthly instalment.

Assumptions used in this calculator

  • Interest is calculated on a reducing balance basis, compounded monthly.
  • The balloon payment is entered as a percentage of the amount financed, not the vehicle price.
  • The monthly service fee is estimated at R69 excluding VAT, in line with the NCA cap, and is not part of the instalment figure itself.
  • This calculator does not include the once off initiation fee, insurance premiums, or extended warranty and service plan costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Subtract your deposit and trade-in from the vehicle price to find the amount financed, then apply reducing balance amortisation over your loan term at your interest rate. The calculator above does this automatically.

New car rates typically range from 9% to 15% and used car rates from 10% to 20%, depending on your credit profile. A rate around 2% above the prime lending rate is generally considered competitive.

No. A balloon payment lowers your monthly instalment, but interest still accrues on the balloon portion for the whole term, so the total interest paid is usually higher than a loan with no balloon.

Yes. Select Monthly Instalment to Vehicle Price above, enter what you can afford each month, and the calculator works out the amount financed and vehicle price that instalment supports.

The total monthly payment figure includes an estimated NCA-capped service fee, but not comprehensive car insurance, the once off initiation fee, or optional service and warranty plans, which vary by insurer and dealer.
